"Effective business strategy is about determining future capability needs and then turning capability concepts into reality" - George Vicino, Managing Director, SYPAQ

SYPAQ's proven methodology ensures a coherent, cohesive, holistic and disciplined approach to corporate strategy and the development of corresponding business capability.

Getting the capability needs of the business right is a complex task, which links corporate strategy and operational concepts to the future market place and economic environment.

SYPAQ's approach ensures that you select the right capabilities to deliver your strategic business objectives, within your available funding.

SYPAQ ensures that business goals and initiatives are derived from strategic guidance, future technology trends, future concepts and an assessment of the performance of the emerging business against the strategic objectives directed by the Board.

At a practical level, SYPAQ provides your strategy people with a single one-stop shop for turning corporate strategy into corporate capability: from mapping of strategy to capability needs through to the development of fully costed business cases ready for Board approval.

SYPAQ recognises that the success of any strategic business initiative is heavily dependent on support from stakeholders and subject matter experts across the business. SYPAQ's method includes extensive stakeholder engagement, prioritisation and analysis mechanisms.

SYPAQ also acknowledges that strategic capability development is not static and therefore should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that emerging capability challenges or gaps are identified and solutions found in a timely manner.

SYPAQ's approach therefore incorporates a regular review process called Cyclic Capability Update (CCU). The CCU identifies any mismatch between the existing strategic goals and the evolving capability, projected performance and resources, and then recommends options to address this.

SYPAQ's approach ensures analytical rigour in determining, documenting and realising future capability needs based on corporate business strategy. Unlike other approaches, SYPAQ focuses on capability development not simply on technology upgrades or enhancements. This results in the continual build of a capability knowledge base to support future decisions, rather than reinventing the wheel in each cycle. This also means that the business is built on a capability framework or architecture defined by capability performance which is measurable against clearly defined capability baselines.

Some of the strengths of this approach include:

  • better transparency between strategic priorities and capability decisions;
  • provision of a structured mechanism for boards to consider the balance between strategic and financial priorities;
  • design of an efficient, balanced business structure that can respond to a range of risks and contingencies by explicitly addressing those risks and contingencies in the strategic capability definition phase; and
  • greater confidence that the range of expertise and information available has been appropriately built into the conclusions.
